Disaster Porn

I just learned a great new term (at least imho) — disaster porn.

Disaster porn (for the uninitiated, if I was not the only one failing to recognize that perhaps well-established term — feel free to mock me accordingly) is what the mainstream media relies upon to flood their audience’s minds.

Also called dessert news in my circles (i.e. news without a lot, if any, informational nutrients), disaster porn in essence defies the people’s critical right to know due to the largely irrelevant nature of such disasters with respect to their impact upon society at large.

For example, a serious car crash is horrible (so too is a fire, murder, and so on), but they are relatively isolated incidences with little impact upon society. Meanwhile, there are oligarchical abuses (e.g. monstrous anti-trust violations throughout the healthcare industry forming massive price fixing, a mass destructive war on drugs that remains concretely unproven in terms of literally any societal benefit, a massive credit bubble due to merely pretending to address the problems forming the last economic crisis, and so on) being rampantly perpetrated without a peep by the mainstream media to properly raise the alarm of the mass mind.

Compounding the problem by constantly flooding those minds with advertising messages that basically state your life is imperfect without product/service ‘x’, and add enough alcohol to kill a lot of brain cells — and we have our mainstream mentality (one usually victoriously voting nonetheless).

Alcohol is okay (even though it makes us stupider), materialism is critical (because marketers constantly tap into our psychology to basically impress that conclusion upon us), and largely irrelevant tragedy is great food for the mind (thank you, mainstream media).

I once regarded entertainment as a luxury item of sorts (i.e. society can live without entertainment, if need be).

But now I understand that entertainment is a critical property of education, which is obviously a critical part of society.

Education is successfully sharing information.

Information can be useful or otherwise (usually depending upon context).

Entertainment is always educational — regardless of the debatable nature with respect to the value of the expressed information.

Therefore, I promote (and am doing my best to be a solid part of) responsible entertainment (i.e. the responsible sharing of publicly relevant information in an entertaining way).

Entertainment apparently leads society, because education without being entertaining is usually insufficient with regards to impressing minds (so not really education).

If society does not get entertainment right, then society crumbles into stupidity.

Is that where our society is right now? Crumbling into stupidity?

Feel free to drop a comment with your answer, as I do read them, and always welcome the opportunity for reciprocated informational nutrients (basically life is a learning process).

My answer (fwiw) is entertainment is usually not right these days throughout history (due to the constant flood of cheap and easy expressions just to make a buck), but the information age logically gives way to the education age (which is basically synonymous with the entertainment age).

People like us can create our own global communities of responsible entertainment (e.g. where a sense of humor resonates proudly, but not without sacrificing informational nutrients needed to keep the mind healthy).

I'm an honest freak (or reasonably responsibly balanced "misfit", if you prefer) of an entertainer working and resting as my careful contribution to help improve society. Too many people abuse reasoning (e.g. 'partial truth = whole truth' scam), while I exercise reason to explore and express whole truth without any conflict-of-interest.
